Spurred by fears that images and sounds from the Newtown massacre would wind up on the Internet or in a rumored Michael Moore documentary, Connecticut lawmakers hastily passed a law last June that prohibits the release of any homicide scene photos and some audio recordings under the state Freedom of Information Act.

To compensate for the dearth of debate, the bill also created an advisory task force on victim privacy and the public’s right to know. The panel’s recommendations are now being considered by the Legislature, starting with hearings scheduled for March 10 in both the Judiciary and Government Administration
